KTVU Apologizes for Falling for Gross Asiana Prank

KTVU made television (and Internet) history the other day when, while reporting on the Asiana Airlines plane that crashed in San Francisco last week, read out fake (and terribly offensive) names for the crew flying it.

In a statement sent out to the media, KTVU apologizes for the mishap.

“We sincerely regret the error and took immediate action to apologize, both in the newscast where the mistake occurred, as well as on our website and social media sites,” Tom Rapioni, VP and general manager of KTVU/KICU, says.

However, Rapioni stresses that the fault lies with the National Transportation Safety Board, which signed off on the names.

According to the NTSB, which has owned up to the mistake, it was an intern who approved the names on the list and then sent them out to the media – KTVU, in particular.
