PS4 Camera Might Detect Hand Gestures and Other Kinect-like Commands, Sony Says

Sony has confirmed that its PlayStation 4 Camera peripheral can detect quite a few things when it launches alongside the PS4 next-gen console this fall and that, with subsequent software updates, its capabilities can improve and allow features similar to the Xbox One and its new Kinect.

Microsoft is betting big on the Kinect and Xbox One combination, selling the two devices as part of a bundle, while Sony has left the PS Camera outside the regular retail package of the PS4 to achieve a lower price.

Even so, the peripheral is quite powerful, as it can detect voice commands from users and even scan the face of a player and then log him into his PSN account.

According to Sony's Masayasu Ito, who talked with Eurogamer, the capabilities of the camera will be improved by future software updates and it will be able to detect hand gestures and allow a navigation of the user interface similar to the one possible on the Xbox One and Kinect.

Concrete update plans weren't revealed, as Sony wants to focus on the PS4 first and then on peripherals.
