Typically Christmas day is a slow one for technology news, but apparently the good folks at the Android Open Kang Project have dragged their coding machines in front of the open fire. Today AOKP has posted the first nightly builds of Android 4.4.2, granting deliciously fresh custom ROMs to all the good little girls and boys. And all the bad ones too, I suppose.
The list of initially-supported devices doesn't cover AOKP's official support list yet, but it covers most of the major Nexus devices, Samsung's Galaxy SIII and S4 American and international incarnations, all five major versions of the HTC One, and a handful of Sony devices (because they tend to be pretty open as far as bootloaders and modifications go). Here's the full list, which wi ll probably be expanded over the coming weeks:
- Nexus 5
- Nexus 4
- Nexus 10
- Nexus 7 (2013)
- Galaxy Nexus [ed. note: both Verizon and GSM models]
- Galaxy S 3 (Verizon, ATT, T-Mo, USC)
- Galaxy S 4 (Verizon, Sprint, T-Mo, USC)Galaxy Note 2 (ATT, T-Mo, LTE-Intl.)
- HTC One (ATT, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mo, Intl.)
- Xperia Z, ZL
- Xperia T
- Xperia V
Nightly builds are generally for the adventurous anyway, but the AOKP announcement unequivocally suggests a full data wipe from any ROM, including AOKP ROMs, though some of the latter Jelly Bean 4.3 builds might be OK. Also note that the somewhat confusing nomenclature of previous AOKP releases has been dropped - this is simply "AOKP KitKat" in its nightly form.
For all devices above, you should be able to download and flash the latest nightly build from a custom recovery with no trouble, though a Nandroid backup is always recommended. Gapps package for the Google Play Store and other Google proprietary apps can be found on the ROM download pages.
