Tiny Token Empires

Today's roundup is presented by Tiny Token Empires from HeroCraft. This game has an interesting mix of genres: the city and empire building is reminiscent of a Civilization-style game set in 2000 B.C. But the way that your empire expands is kind of like Risk... until you get into the actual battles, which play out as a swapping puzzle game. It's an intriguing and humorous combination of strategy and puzzle elements, with HeroCraft's usual spit and polish. There are five individual campaigns in the $4.99 game, with three difficulty settings for new, intermediate, and advanced strategy players.

Final Fantasy IV

< strong>Android Police coverage: [New Game] Square Enix's Final Fantasy IV Available On The Play Store, With Full 3D Graphics And The Usual High Price

Just like Final Fantast III before it, FFIV is getting a fancy re-release on Android. This isn't the old pixelated version you may remember from the SNES days, it's the Nintendo DS 3D remake, complete with a revamped battle system, new graphics (decent for Android) and a new touch interface. It's super expensive, but those jaw-dropping pre-rendered cinematics that Square likes to shove into its RPGs might just be worth it.

--

"FINAL FANTASY IV" has finally come to the Android. The title first debuted in 1991 as the fourth installment in the FINAL FANTASY series. Wildly popular thanks to its unique characters and dram atic storylines, it went on to be ported to many different platforms. FINAL FANTASY IV was the first title to introduce the Active Time Battle (ATB) system, which has become synonymous with the series. It also saw the introduction of the Augment system, which enabled the transfer of abilities from other characters and gave players an edge in battles.

Quadropus Rampage

Android Police review: [New Game] Quadropus Rampage Review: A Bit Shallow, But Oceans Of Fun

If an octopus had four tentacles instead of eight, it would be called a quadropus. If that creature got seriously pissed off and decided to kill everything in a leveled, roguelike brawler, you'd have Quadropus Rampage. The game is free, with the usual IAP upsell.

--

The Forest of Doom

Combining Tin Man Games' signature Choose Your Own Adventure/tabletop roleplaying games with a Dungeo ns & Dragons-style storyline seems like such an obvious move, it's amazing that they haven't done it already. Like most of the game-books that came before it, The Forest of Doom is expensive, but well worth it for fans of these unique niche. Unfortunately, the digital die in the game still have a pedestrian six sides.

Nostalgia overload. Fighting Fantasy returns with Ian Livingstone's classic, The Forest of Doom. Take part in one of the classic gamebook experiences that introduced a whole generation to fantasy role-playing games. Ticket to Ride

Android Police coverage: [New Game] Board Game Ticket To Ride Pulls Into The Android Station

Ticket To Ride is a successful train-based board game, which has made a small spl ash on iOS. It took them more than a year to bring this title over to Android, which is a bit of an insult, but those who love the original game will be willing to forgive the creators this slight. You can play against the computer to get the longest continuous train route, or play against up to four human opponents instead. The game is surprisingly expensive at $7.

--

Ticket to Ride for Android is a cross-country train adventure playable online, in which you will collect and play train cards to claim railway routes connecting cities listed on Destination Tickets you will receive at the start of each game. The longer your routes, the more points you'll earn. But be careful not to find yourself blocked off by your opponents, as each Destination ticket not fulfilled will cost you dearly.

Ku: Shroud of the Morrigan

8-bit style is all well and good, but Android devices are powerhouses - let's see some great graphics, even in 2D! Ku takes the old Zelda style and infuses it with some breathtaking character and environmental design, all based on Celtic mythology with a healthy dose of steampunk. There's an overarching story that you might find interesting, and the interface is decidedly mobile-friendly as well.

--

Ku: Shroud if the Morrigan is an Action Adventure Game in which Ireland's ancient past and economic present collide. You play as young K, who must venture out in to a broken and strange world for the first time. You will have to battle monsters, solve puzzles and retrieve an ancient treasure from the goddess Morrigan. Forged from an ancient tale of Celtic mythology - a uniquely different recounting of the massive legendary epic, the Tin.

Battlestone is a dungeon crawler at heart, though the swiping interface makes it more mobile-friendly than most. Collect hero units and grind on computer-controlled baddies, or duke it out with real people in multiplayer. But you'd better hope they haven't sunk a ton of money into Zynga's usual pay-to-win IAP scenario.

Beware of the usual free-to-play trappings.

--

Twin Blades

Ah, the old classic tale: nun meets zombies, nun grabs various weapons, nun kills zombies, rinse and repeat. Twin Blades features some heavy anime influence, but its gameplay is pure 16-bit beat-em-up. You'll improve your skills and equipment as you mow through enemies and bosses, and the stages morph according to a real-time game clock, opening new areas and bad guys. Play Store reviews report awesome 2D graphics, but controls which are sometimes cumbersome.

--

TwinBlades is a frantic shooter game set in a medieval era with unique manga-like graphics. SlamBots

If the standard jumping platformer game included robots, ninjas, demons, and the unstoppable Velocispider, it would look like this (and it would be a lot more awesome). SlamBots is pretty basic: tilt the phone left of right to climb up and down the stage, tapping to slam and smash bad guys like Mario on ketamine. Fans of pixelated graphics will get an extra kick out of this one.

--

SlamBots. SLAM your way through swarms of evil robots in this action packed arena batt le game. The Redneckoning

There are two things everyone knows about rednecks: they tend to have exquisite taste when it comes to chewing tobacco and mobile homes, and they like their guns. This makes them pretty perfect foot soldiers to fight against an alien invasion, as turret shooter The Redneckoning demonstrates. Players can utilize suitably over-the-top weapons and powerups as they defend 'Murica from those no-good illegal space aliens, and shell out real money for more when the ammo runs dry.

--

Aliens have invaded and they've set up shop in Roscoe's favorite neck of the woods. Determined to make a stand, he's taken off in his truck with the biggest gun he could find; Roscoe's not going to let them vermin run rampant in his town. The real question is, how many can he take out before they get him? Obliterate enemies using abilities like Artillery Strikes and Nucular 'Splosions. Activate buffs like Riled Up to generate more rage. Shoot power-ups in the field like Incendiary Rounds which turn Roscoe's gun into a fiery death dealing machine.

GelaTennis

Imagine if Breakout was played in a circle, with one horrible pun for its title. That's GelaTennis (get it?) in a nutshell - tap the sides of the circle to keep the balls going, until you run out of targets, time, or balls. That probably could have been phrased better. The technical presentation is impressive for such a simple game.

--

The goal of GelaTennis is simply to achieve the highest score. That objective can be achieved best by keeping the most balls alive for the longest possible time.

Slydris

Yup, it's Tetris, with a new perspective. Instead of waiting for blocks to fall vertically, you slide individual blocks left or right, clearing a path for the blocks above to fall and create combos. It's a lot like Tetris Blitz from EA, without the mind-numbing push towards social gaming. Standard time attack and marathon modes are augmented by a "zen mode" for less frantic sessions.

--

Slydris is a unique and engaging puzzle game with a simple premise but deceptively deep gameplay:

  • Slide and drop blocks to create full lines of blocks.
  • Create combos of falling blocks and clearing lines to fill up your bomb meter faster.
  • Create a row of a single color for a colo r burster.
  • Other special blocks (Shatter, Upcoming, Locked, and Magnet) add gameplay variety and challenge.

The Boomerang Trail

This is a simple puzzle game. You use a projectile to trace a trail of lights on the game board. Why the Australian theme, complete with boomerangs and a kangaroo dressed like an aboriginal warrior? Search me. Try not to hit the obstacle s, and use trick shots with special boomerangs for those hard-to-reach areas. Just try to resist the urge to punch that smug cartoon - I'm getting Duck Hunt flashbacks just looking at him.

--

Take to the Australian outback and master the hunters trail. Follow the kangaroo spirit through the Australian wilderness, along your trail to enlightenment and learn the ancient aboriginal art of Rang throwing. A wonderfully simple throwing mechanic will allow you to quickly become skilled at throwing Boomerangs, Splitterangs and Kaboomerangs. There are many trails to complete and tokens to collect while avoiding the Australian wildlife, and testing your skills at Rang throwing.

Color Zen

Here's one of those super-simple concept games that all the kids are talking about. Combine the shapes in Color Zen t o either eliminate them or spread them to the entire playing field. Zero out all the colors, and you win the round. --

Color Zen is a new kind of puzzle game. One that invites you to put on your headphones, relax, and find your way through an abstract world of colors and shapes. There is no score. No penalties for failure. Just a simple set of rules, intuitive controls, and satisfying puzzles. Get into the flow with Color Zen. After Earth

Usually it's not a great sign for a licensed mobile game if it employs the standard In finity Blade beat-em-up or endless runner style. But After Earth uses both, so it can't possibly fail, right? Right? In its defense, the game looks decent enough in the graphics department, and if you feel the need to dive deeper into the movie's plot (a pretty shallow pool in itself, by all accounts) it should serve well enough. Keep an eye out for the Hollywood nepotism power-up!

--

After Earth is an all-new game based on the film where you can slide, leap and fly through perilous terrain, and slice and dice evil creatures that lurk in the dark with your cutlass sword. Heads up: you probably shouldn't buy this game. We're only including it in this roundup to dissuade potential purchases. After fumbling the launch and taking World War Z off the Play Store for a few days, the developer still hasn't resolved some game-killing licensing issues. Those who have actually managed to play it say it's a pretty boring rail shooter... but only after the 1.4GB download destroyed any chance of a refund for the $4.99 title. Oh, and there's IAP as well. Thanks, Phosphor, for maintaining the low standards of licensed games.
